One of the consistent themes we hear from PACE members is that teachers are not given the freedom they need to thrive as professionals. With this in mind, the focus of this committee will be to look for ways to promote policies that increase teacher freedoms and opportunities.

Some of the suggestions from teachers that could be taken up by this committee have included fostering a marketplace for teacher talent by promoting policies which allow teachers to move from one school district to another without losing any years of service, or offering a portable retirement option for teachers that don’t want their money going into PERA. Other suggestions have included creating clearer pathways into the profession, as well as better pathways for career advancement outside of the traditional seniority-based salary schedule or becoming an administrator.

This committee is an opportunity for teachers interested in getting more involved in education policy to start having an impact on the future of the teaching profession.

We also recognize that teachers are busy. Therefore, the commitment for being on this committee is to simply participate in a monthly conference call to discuss the various topics related to teacher freedom and to attend at least one in-person meeting with state policymakers to make recommendations about policy changes you support.

You will also be able to volunteer for opportunities to write op-eds, blog for PACE’s website, testify at a state legislative or local school board meeting, attend events, or advocate in other ways that you choose.
